Super Tuber

Mohnschnecke1There’s nothing special with these potatoes. They just succeeded being mentioned because I had to cook them already today for my tomorrow’s post. The main ingredient of many recipes in a German food magazine called “Gugelhupf” is actually our beloved potato. I was specially attracted by a picture of a cup cake filled with poppy seed and tangerines. Will that be good? Pastry with curd cheese, potatoes and sweet fruit? We’ll see but for today’s dinner I just cooked 3 extra potatoes (appr. 10 oz) for tomorrow. Now they’re mashed and waiting for processing. Tomorrow I’ll therefore spend some time in my kitchen to try these “Pastry-snails”. I’ll report on the result and the taste of the cup cakes afterwards. If you like to try the recipe yourself immediately after my post you should start boiling your potatoes tomorrow morning at the latest…..

Little Gifts

Zipperarmband1While fabricating your Advent calendar you should already look for little gifts that fit. Boys and girls will love these colorful zipper bracelets. I just prepared three bracelets with different pendants. Dog and ball are attached with removable carabiners while the green heart (remainder of a necklace I once made) is fixed with a chain pin and can’t be removed without jewelry tools. When sliding the zipper you determine the position of your pendant and you’ll get a two-piece bracelet when it is completetely opened. But you may wear the bracelet without any pendant or simply combine several different colors and wind them round your wrist. The price for a single bracelet in web shops varies between 1.50 and 2.50£ and makes it interesting for St Nicholas’ Day or Christmas Eve.

One more Advent calendar

Adventkalender7Girls love gifts – boys do too. That’s why today I want to show you another calendar apt for boys/men or others you want to make happy. It all depends on the selection of your paperboard. I chose three different ones. The green one looks a bit like a Christmas tree giving the impression of a little forest with 24 pyramids. In this case I’d line a large tray with wadding, place the “trees” and put some Christmas balls and stars in it. For the other two boxes I considered the favourite colours of the beneficiary. I’ll place them on a large silver tray (here I took a small one so that the boxes don’t look too lost) with a bright tea light in the middle and some fir sprigs in between. You’ll find the pattern for download here. In case you want to make boxes with corrugated cardboard I drew corrugation line. The pattern shows one half of the box and needs to be turned at its baseline when transferred to your cardboard. Cut out the pyramid and fold dashed line with a folding tool or your scissors. Therefore take one blade and tear the inner side of it along a ruler to score the cardboard lightly. Fold sides up to the left inner side of your box and the middle of the ball on top just to the other side.  Fold up all four sides after filling and close with a nice ribbon just a the bottom of the “ball”. Seperately packed sweets or samples of shower gel, shampoo or other wellness products will fill these boxes. If you like it really precious you may write down the day numbers with a gold- or silver colored pen. Otherwise you can still download numbers using the link of my previous post. If you attach them to the ribbon you may use the boxes further on supposed that you didn’t take Christmas paper.

2 in 1

Adventkalender5There’s not even a month left before the advent season. That means a lot of work for me to get ready with all the advent calendars to be prepared. This year my proposal for a nice girly calendar is a white heart to be used as a card holder later on. The little gifts may be wrapped in many different ways. The fotos show a version with cornets and another one with two sorts of wrapped gifts. For the cornets you need to draw quadrants which are to be turned in over their tip and then fastened with glue. I chose a length of 5-6 inches for the cornet sides and fastened crumpled tissue paper on the inner edge of them. The tissue paper should mesure 12 x 8 inches. If you don’t have time to make the cornets then you may wrap typical Christmas sweets and accessories in wrapping paper and attach them to the heart. Numbers from 1 to 24 in blue and red can be downloaded here or bought in crafts stores. To both, cornets and gifts, I attached a knotted curly ribbon which I fixed between the double hearts originalley meant to hold cards or photos.
If you dispose of some space in your house or appartment or want to surprise someone not being really fond of hearts and pink you’re well advised with the advent calendar of branches. You need two of them with a size of about 2 yards and four smaller ones mesuring between 0.5 and 0.8 yards. Tie them together like a ladder with Christmas ribbons or thin manila rope and drive 6 nails into each of the smaller branches. The gifts will be attached to the nails with a ribbon loop. My calendar is assembled with small bags filled with sweets.
Decorate heart or branches with Christmas baubles, stars and other accessories. After Christmas the branches can be stored space-savingly when dismantled.

Lovely Guys

Weckmann6I agree, he’s a bit plump and didn’t fasten properly the buttons of his jacket. Besides he looks a bit like Barbapapa and not as a typical “Weckmann” (Breadman made with yeast dough). But well the taste, yeah the taste is as expected sweet and mellow. Just right for breakfast and for tea we will have some smaller ones. That avoids the necessary cutting off and all the crumbs. The coarse sugar makes them even more attractive. The Weckmann or Stutenkerl (nearly each region in Germany has its own name for it) is a traditional pastry preferably consumed around November 11th, St. Martin’s day or in December for St. Nichlas’ day.
This time I don’t write down the recipe seperately because you may as well take the one of my Streusel cake. Roll out the dough at 0.4 inches and make little men with a cookie cutter. Form a large roll of the remaining dough and take off one end of it to make a head. The other end cut in halves makes the legs of our Weckmann. For his arms just make two cuts at the side of his body and tear them away. These holes will close qhen baking but the arms will still to be seen. For eyes and buttons you can take hazelnuts or raisins. Then apply some whisked egg yolk and add some coarse sugar for the small men.
You should bake the small men seperately at 360°F because they only need 15 or 20 minutes to become golden brown. The large Weckmann should be baked for about 20-25 minutes at the same temperature.
