World Cup

WM2014

Most of the national championships are finished and everybody’s looking forward to the World Cup in Brazil. If the weather’s fine many Germans like to host a kind of public viewing in their garden and so do we. Given the right decoration you’ll have real football/soccer feeling at home. This means for us to take a decoration in black, red and gold but you can do all parts as well in red, blue and white or any other colour. For the center of my table I cut apart one of these lovely Hawaiian necklaces and flags in our national colours embellish all glasses. Furthermore I took some paper napkins with a football print which I fixed with a small green ribbon.
Cardstock in colours of your national flag will cover simple jars to hold the cutlery. Cut stripes in the height of your jars and 1″ longer than the circumference of it. Make a cut up to half of the height on the opposite long sides at 1/2″ from the end. Then close the stripes to a roll by connecting both cuts. Fix the overlapping sides with some glue.
Really good looking coasters can be done with this freebie. Simply print them, cut them out and glue them on top of some paper coasters.
A yellow and red card just show all drinks and food. Nibbles are offered in small bowls placed on a pitch. Therefore take some green cardstock and draw the center, penalty area and so on with a white pen or glue it with some stripes of white cardstock.
If you like you can even make one pitch for each of your guests and place some small national bannerets on top. Now all we can do is hope for nice weather and exciting matches.

Cut-up pancake

A quick lunch that makes hearts beat faster. I don’t eat raisins and therefore my cut-up pancake shouldn’t be named Kaiserschmarrn, like the Austrian original. Today I’m savouring them with marinated strawberries this time. Prepare fruit as usually and cut if they’re too big. Mix 2-3 tbsp of orange juice, 1-2 tsp of honey and 1 bag of vanilla sugar and pour over strawberries. Let rest about 20 minutes and turn fruits carefully from time to time. Prepare pancakes as described in recipe card, add some strawberries and dust with powdered sugar. Delicious!

Table Setting with Strawberries

Erdbeergesteck5We’ll have strawberry cake for Sunday and I’d like to have some of these delicious fruit for my table setting too. Out of my gift for Mother’s day I chose a lovely setting with little woodland strawberries. Thanks to the lot of birds living in our garden we do have lots of them growing beneath the bushes. I took one with its clod and wrapped it in fresh cherry laurel leaves fixing this roll with a wire spiral. Therefore take two pieces of florist wire (20″) and cover them with a sisal ribbon. Both ends are to be fixed with a dot of hot glue. Gather both wires and twist them spirally leaving about 1″ at one end to be put in floral foam lateron. Put strawberry with clod into that little leafy pot and water carefully. Take some floral foam and place it on a flat bowl filled with a bit of water. Cover your foam with box tree tips all over and place your strawberry in the middle. If you like just take a small checkered ribbon loop it and fix it with a small piece of wire that can be placed in the floral foam.
Quite useful – this table setting for nibbling that can be planted in the garden or in flower pots afterwards.

Tote bag

Beutel3Being an avid crafter I’m always looking for what like-minded people are doing. Reading Lola Nova’s blog I found this wonderful instruction for an easy-peasy tote bag. Quite often I already stumbled over a heavy jeans cloth that was planned to become a long skirt but never did. The firmness of this material is perfect for a bag that has to carry home 2-4lb of potatoes or other heavy things. That’s why I decided to cut off the necessary length for such a tote. Like Antonia, she wrote a German instruction, I love neatly worked objects and therefore took a cotton cloth to sew a second inner tote.  That prevents annoying seems or unraveling allowances. The original instructions are very clear so that I followed them step by step. I made two little changes however. I hate searching my house keys so that I took a key ribbon with carabiner, placed it between the two layers of my cotton cloth and fixed it when sewing the side seams of the bag. In addition I made a little bag for my mobile phone. (total up width and thickness of your mobile and add 0.5″ seam allowance) Cut out cloth twice, place right side against right side and sewleaving one side open. Then turn inside out and fold in allowance of open bottom. Before fixing it it might be helpful to hold the tote in your hands once to see where exactly the handy bag needs to be placed so that it won’t drop out lateron.
A useful tote that can be used for daily shopping as well as for a walk to the beach.
