Dessert basket

Apfel6Seen on pinterest and immediately realised on our wedding anniversary – this wonderful proposal for serving a dessert. At the end of summer there’s lots of fruit available so that I decided to serve a fruit salad as dessert. The apple which is always part of my fruit salad will now be transformed into a little basket. From a cap round the stipe I cut a nice flower. The apple then needs to be hollowed out, the core removed and the pulp cut into dice for the fruit salad. You may as well fill your apple basket with curd, assorted berries or vanilla flan. Fix a small spit (toothpick) into the flower and place it at the edge of your basket. Add some granola or yoghurt to your composition of fruit and ready is a very decorative and tasty dessert.

Puprle Shamrock

Oxalis5Having a distant look at this plant you may think it’s cut out of paper. That’s due to the very fine thin leaves. The oxalis triangularis commonly called Purple Shamrock really has triangular leaves which are closing at dusk and then look like little lampions. That’s why some people also call it the sleepy Shamrock. Its flowers are from white to light pink. You may grow it in- and outside. It requires bright and sunny places. It’s not hardy and should therefor be taken inside in due time. On a southern window sill it may even have flowers in winter. It doesn’t need manuring from autumn to spring. Start placing at a warmer place in February and place outside mid May.

Owl for starting school

Eule1The first day at school – for most of the kids a very special day. German kids usually spend the afternoon then with their grandparents, godparents and friends. On this occasion these little sweet owls will be welcome. Some cellphane bags filled with sweets will make the body which is glued between a folded card stock head. It’s best to use double sided adhesive tape so that the bag easily can be opened lateron. Cut the eyes out of colored or white card stock. Using white card stock you should draw an orange rim around the pupil which itself has a white spot giving it a more vivid look.
You may also give this sweet owl into the school cornet. Find all patterns here.

Summer on the table

BlumenvasenQuick, easy but very effective. Simply collect some herbages and flowers from the roadside and put them into simple glass vases filled with colored water. Therefor just stir some food color into the water before inserting the flowers. That’s my way of using old food colors. A potpourri of different paper napkins and dinnerware will bring summer mood for a nice barbecue.
Note: Before placing the vases on your table just but them aside for 10-15 minutes to give little scrambling guests the opportunity to disappear.

Kleiner Tipp: Bevor man die gepflückten Blumen auf den Tisch stellt, sollte man sie 10-15 Minuten etwas abseits stehen lassen, um kleinen, krabbelnden Gästen die Gelegenheit zur Flucht zu geben.

Summer garland

Sommergirlande6Why not decorate your table with a garland of summer leaves? From the hedge at the end of our garden I cut a lot of cherry laures leaves having a little stem. With the help of floral binding wire I assembled three or four of these leaves to little bunches. These bunches are fixed on a rope or a plastic cord closely spaced. When riding my bike I use to stop every now and then to collect flowers, branches or fruit of shrubs growing at the roadside. These are rose hips, elder, snowberries and the snowballbush with its wonderful red berries. I loosely placed these finds between the laurel leaves.
Maybe you’ll find it looking too much like autumn already. Then simply place fresh flowers in between the leaves and you’ll have summer back on your table.
