Bread in a bottle

Bottlecake5A wonderful gift for Christmas that was tried directly after the holidays. The ingredients for this luscious walnut- oat flakes bread were filled in a milk bottle. After adding some further ingredients you can bake it immediately. It’s a bread for all those who love a sweet breakfast or those who want to savour it for tea time. Even for children it’s quite easy to prepare this baking mix. The original recipe was found on elmasuite.de but we changed it a little bit for Christmas and added some traditional holiday spices.

Salutation

Newyear7This traditional cake for New Year doesn’t need a new recipe. Simply take a sweet yeast dough and perpare it as usual. Let rise until its size has doubled. Then divide into 6-8 portions. Form two rolls from each portion and roll snails from both ends. (see picture) Cross both snail rolls in the middle and place them on a baking sheet. Whisk an egg yolk with a bit milk and spread it on your New Year’s breads. They’re a lucky charm in Rhineland and the four snails symbolize the four seasons of the New Year.

Angel napkin

Serviettenengel1Before Christams little elfes, Christmas trees and stars are my favourite decoration. For Christmas Dinner however I want them to be accompanied by angels. To be honest I didn’t find any napkin folded like an angel I really liked. Most of them are hardly to recognize as such. So there had to be done some experimenting and cutting work at home. This version now looks nice when it’s standing either on the table or directly on the plates. The starting point is a “mainsail” that has been altered with some further folds so that the wings will fit. (Modification step by step beneath the pictures of my galery) The wings are cut either of translucent or golden paper. It’s easiest to fold the template in half, adjust it along the break line of your paper, draw it and cut it out. Pull folded napkin sidewise through both slits starting with the lower one and turn it so that the skirts’ pleats will show to the back. Softly tear apart the upper end of the napkin to obtain the silhouette of a head.
