Save the flower

Flower1Who didn’t have the problem yet – the bouquet of flowers has withered but a single blossom’s still looking too good to be thrown away. But what can we do with them? All alone in a vase they often look a bit lost. There’s help with two stems of Kerria japonica. I fixed them with a small raffia ribbon so that there’s a small gap of 1/2 inch left. Place the trimmed blossom between the stems and arrange it with some leaves which are probably left from your bouquet or just pick some from a bush growing in your garden. Place some dried berries and a hat of beechnuts aside and ready is your lovely decoration. In addition I gave some dark brown pebbles into the water.

Advent plannings

Teabox1

Temperatures say something different but a look at the calendar just tells us that Christmas is approaching in big steps. Till the 1st of December we’ve just left a bit more than three weeks. That’s why I propose to start preparing your advent calendar right now. Feeding the search function with the cue “advent calendar” will lead you to my last year proposals. I’ll make some new ones this year too and will also show some kind gift boxes or gift wrappings. The first one is a kind of booklet holding some little chocolate, tea bags, banknotes or gift coupons. Besides Christmas card stock you’ll need advent calendar numbers from 1-24, different ribbons and stickers to close the booklets. Print the template, draw it on your card stock and fold it as marked. Fold up both flaps and fix them with glue or double sided adhesive tape. (The bigger green booklet is a gift tag remainder from last year and I only glued in one flap to place a gift coupon.) If you want to close the booklet with a ribbon simply cut a thin slit in the middle of both sides. Fill the booklet, close it and stick your advent calendar number.
These little gift booklets are very nice for other occasions too. Just decorate them with ribbons, name tags or other small ornaments.

Tiny snail

Snail1

This happens if you leave your center piece outside on the table of your terrasse. The perfume of rosemary and sage leaves must have attracted this tiny snail. No wonder, already at the end of the 19th century Wilhelm Busch, a famous German poet, knew about the excellent scent of these slow moving creatures.

Tastend streckt sich ihr Gehörne, – Fumbling with their antlers,
schwach nur ist das Augenlicht.    – only weak their sight.
Dennoch schon aus weiter Ferne, – no matter how far away
wittern sie ihr Leibgericht.             – they’re winding the favourite dish.

Schleimig, säumig, aber stete,       – Slimy, slowly, however steady,
immer auf dem nächsten Pfad,     – always on the next trail,
finden sie die Gartenbeete,            – they’ll find within the garden bed
mit dem schönen Kopfsalat.          – the sweetes lettuce.

I don’t know how long it took her to climb up the sage leaves. For the way down however she needed the whole afternoon. She didn’t seem to feel upset because without hesitating she started climbing down the table leg. That calmness is to die for and snails, according to an ancient tale seem to know that:

When holding a meeting all animals complained about humans taking different things away. “They’re taking my milk”, the cow said. “They’re taking my eggs”, said the sitting hen. “They’re using my flesh for ham”, the pig said and “they’re hunting me for the oil”, added the whale. Finally the snail hat it’s say: “I’m owning something they would surely take away from me if only they could. Something they request more than anything else. I have plenty of time.”

Diverted tea cups

Cup7No matter whether in full colors of autumn or in harmonic colors, whether used for tea or coffee – with a little bit of imagination and some little flowers and twigs you will make scarcely used cups shine again. They’ll look fine on your table as well as on a little side table. Simply cut a piece of floral foam suiting your cup, fill cup with water and start sticking flowers and leaves into the foam. Not being the owner of a garden simply take home whatever you find when ranging the woods and fill your cups with these finds. Being welcomed with one of these cups on the breakfast table will make you enjoy your early morning tea even more and the day will look much better immediately.

Mini gift box

Giftbox1Finally I managed to prepare the template for this lovely little gift box. It’s always the same box that can be decorated differently according to the event they’re planned for. Children will love the little turtle or the ladybeetle. The chocolate for a dear friend will feel fine in a flowery box and the voucher for a little girl is decorated with a tiny butterfly. It’s quite easy to decorate the boxes for nearly every event or presentee. Simply print out template and draw outlines on card stock, cut out and fold as plotted. For the incisions on both locking flaps use a cutter. The other two flaps can be cut out to look like bag handles but it’s not absolutely necessary. For the decoration feel free to proceed as you like.
